Elva (Yijun) Yang (杨奕君)

Elva (Yijun) Yang was born in Nanning City, Guangxi province, China and graduated in 2014 from Guangxi Normal University (广西师范大学). Elva has been keen on Chinese calligraphy, literature and culture since she was a child.

She started by studying the history and theory of “regular script” (楷书), then fell in love with the “semi-cursive script” (行书) after studying the art of Mengfu Zhao (赵孟頫) from Chinese Calligraphy Master Yongquan Yu (虞永泉).

Since 2017, Elva has been studying “clerical script” (隶书) with Mr Benlin You (尤本林), Chairman of the Australian Chinese Calligraphy Artist Association Inc. She enjoys the natural and quaint artistic style of the clerical script, and insists on practicing daily, which can be challenging while looking after her young child!

Elva believes the rich history and graceful art of Chinese calligraphy and painting can inspire us to pursue truth, goodness and beauty in all aspects of our lives. Elva has been invited to write Chinese calligraphy on several occasions, and she is happy to share the benefits of Chinese calligraphy and art with people from all over the world.

When I write calligraphy, I feel a deep connection to the ancient Chinese masters’ peace, wisdom and appreciation of beauty.
